The Scribe is back!

It has been far too long since I last visited and utilized the Sardonic Scribe site. As with life, much has transpired since the last time that I posted. Social media has evolved in many ways over the last few years and not all of changes are good. Twitter is used in some of the most vicious ways to demean those who have different ideas and beliefs. Absolute intolerance is demonstrated far and wide for those with different view points. Other social media venues are used and misused for all the wrong reasons too. The vitriol and hatred that is spewed is staggering and mind blowing in scope and intensity.

Over the last few years this country has been thrust into an emotionally driven whirlpool of adversity. The leadership in D.C. and the mainstream media have become nothing but rapidly partisan attack machines against anyone who dare disagree with them. We are being divided along racial, social, sexual, financial, religious, and political lines at every turn. Never before have we become so divided and so much divisiveness is spewed from the mouths of our leaders and the media. At a time when we should be working ever harder to achieve unity and love we are being torn apart at the seems with an “Us against Them” mentality.

During the past year I have become involved in Jail/Prison Ministry which has been life altering for me. I have become very active in my church and the study of God’s Word which has been transformational for me. For far too long I was far to content to be complacent in my ignorance. Like so many, I thought that just going to church a couple of times a week and being seen made everything all right. I could not have been more wrong about anything and nearly everything. Yes, we are to study and learn God’s Word but we are also supposed to walk it and live it in our every day lives and at all times. This understanding has helped me to grow in ways that I never dreamt possible.

Jails and prisons are like microcosms of society. As I talk to the men and watch as they begin changing their lives it becomes evident that you have people from all walks of life and an extremely diverse population. Their are people from abject poverty to men of wealth who have fallen because of sin and weakness of the flesh. These men are at varying stages of their incarceration from being freshly booked into the system to preparing to start serving their sentences after conviction. These men have an absolute abundance of time on their hands and many spend a great deal of time in self reflection.

The men and women in jail and prison ministry are presented vast opportunity to impact the lives of the men and women behind bars. Helping someone accept Jesus and begin a life of service to the Lord is more rewarding than I can possibly express in words. Being used by the Lord to impact someone’s life that way is amazing at the very least. Working with men and women whose hearts are totally devoted and dedicated to this type of service is wonderful and rewarding.

Having spent my adult life working in every aspect of law enforcement imaginable I had become hard and cynical. Upon being approached to consider this type of service my initial response was to say that I am just too cynical to be effective in this type of ministry. After much prayer and reflection I was brought to the realization that what “I” thought did not matter in the least and that if I am being called to serve, then I had better be obedient and do so. My thoughts and feelings are and were irrelevant on the matter and all that was important is that the Lord wants me to serve.

Taking self out of the equation, tearing down some wall of cynicism and opening up has enabled me to approach the jail/prison ministry with a far more open heart and mind. Now, I get to work with people such as a friend from church who a year and a half ago was a crack head and homeless. This man is now clean and sober, has a home, vehicle, and gainful employment and is one of the most dedicated men that I have ever known in his walk with Jesus. I work with men who were former hard core bikers in the foundational days of groups such as the Banditos and Hells Angels who are now totally committed to working and serving the Lord. These men and many, many others who have completely changed their lives forever and are faithfully serving the Lord make it more than worthwhile for me to work alongside them.

The Scribe has turned a page in his life because of Jesus and I will proclaim it as much as I can with the greatest humility and gratitude. Will I still express my opinions on current events, world situations, and politics? Absolutely yes but I will also proclaim my faith in the Lord and describe the joys and blessings of serving Him. We are rapidly approaching Christmas and it is my heart felt prayer that you take a few minutes to reflect on the endless blessings of this time of year. We are soon to celebrate the birth of our Savior! God bless you.
